The Ultima, a very Franciscan tradition

Elizabeth Beliveau, SFO  died on March 5, 2006, at the age of 103.

Our sister, Elizabeth Beliveau, died on Sunday, March 5, 2006, very peacefully in her sleep, and joined her sister Bernadette (see below) , who died in January, to her reward with our Lord Jesus Christ. Elizabeth was professed as a Secular Franciscan on May 22, 1938. She was born in Canada, and was a single lady, who cared for children as their Nanny. We visited her on her birthday on January 27th, with refreshments and we had just a wonderful time with her. She looked wonderful, and told us many stories about her life. We will surely miss her. May God bless her and keep her in His care.

Bernadette Kaufman, SFO  died on January 25, 2006, at the age of 85.

Our Sister, Bernadette Kaufman, age 85, a member of Little Flowers of St. Francis Fraternity, died on Wednesday, January 25th.  She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Sept. 4, 1920.  She was a homemaker with two sons, Robert and Jerry.  In 1973 she moved to Florida, and attended St. Brendan's Church in Ormond Beach.  She became professed as a Secular Franciscan in April 1988.  Bernadette was very active in her Church and was the Librarian and hospitality chairman in our fraternity up until her illness. Our Sister Bernadette was a very kind and gentle person, small in stature but very big of heart.  She greeted everyone with a kiss and a hug and never failed to tell you that she loved you.  On the day of her death, one of our members thought she saw her sitting in her usual place at daily Mass.  It was strange because she knew Bernadette was in a Nursing Home.  Later that day she heard of her death.  We think she made one last visit before her funeral Mass.  We gathered together to pray the funeral service on Sunday, and on Tuesday after a very beautiful Mass, Bernadette was put to rest.  We will miss her smiling face and we pray that St. Francis took her by the hand into the arms of Jesus.  May she rest in peace.

Marcella Ann Richard, SFO died on July 5, 2005, at the age of 79.

Marcella was born at South Bend, Indiana, on February 11, 1926. For a period of 30 years she was a Registered Nurse at the Miami, Florida, VA Medical Center. She lived in Ft. Lauderdale. She moved to Vero Beach in 1999 and joined Divine Mercy Fraternity since then. The fraternity celebrated the 25th Anniversary of her profession in May 2005. Marcella worshipped at St. John of the Cross Church. She has two sisters in Indiana, and close friends in the area. After the Mass of Christian Burial, on July 6, 2005, she will be transferred to the Palmer Funeral Home in West Bend, Indiana, for burial. Marcella has been very ill for a long period of time. Yet, she managed, with the aid of a friend, to visit us at some of our fraternity meetings. We will miss our Sister in St. Francis, Marcella Richard, SFO. She was special to us. Please pray for her. Please thank Jesus for granting her peace.       /Fred S.

Eugene (Gentil) Katoski OFM died on June 29, 2005, at the age of 87.

Received from Marie Thomas, SFO, Minister, Portiuncula Fraternity, Bradenton, Florida  (June 2005)

Mary Ann Parker, SFO (August 10, 1947 - March 31, 2005)

Mary Ann Parker was born in Schenectady, New York and was a special person right from the start. When you watched Mary at prayer, you knew she had a deep love for Saint Francis and the Secular Franciscan life. After she was professed on February 20, 2003, Mary Ann Parker wanted to contribute in some vital way to the fraternity even though she was in a nursing home, so she made many beautiful Franciscan Crown Rosaries - and our Candidates are using today! It will be difficult to look at a Crown Rosary and not remember to say a prayer for Mary.

Clara Shea, SFO (January 29, 1921 - February 28, 2005)

Our Lady of Fatima has been looking over Clara all her life, ever since she was born in St. Michael Azores, Portugal. Her parents had 13 (a baker’s dozen). In Bermuda, she met her husband who was originally from America, married and had five daughters. On November 15, 1995, Clara was professed as a Secular Franciscan and on March 25, 1997, (Feast of the Annunciation) Clara moved to Florida for health reasons and her desire to be closer to her daughter. She will always be remembered as a very "Prayerful and Devoted Secular Franciscan " even though she was in constant pain from her many illnesses.  She will be missed!

Mary Jane Donoughe, SFO
(1922 - January 24, 2005)

Her radiant smile revealed such an angelic countenance that you knew she must be a Franciscan - since November 17, 1957. Mary Jane was born to a typical Pennsylvania family with one brother and one sister. When her brother died in 1997, she moved to Florida to be near her only surviving relative, her sister Eileen. However on January 24, 2005, God called Mary Jane to Himself. Because of her relentless love and loyalty to the Franciscan way of life, we can only envision her in God’s arms enjoying His unconditional love!

Received from Dody Martin, SFO, Minister, Stigmata of St. Francis Fraternity in Sarasota and Southwest Area Councilor (December 2004)

Katherine Grubb, SFO, who was professed on July 15, 2002, died of Ovarian cancer on December 9, 2004. We had a Franciscan Wake service for her at the Funeral Home in Sarasota and several of our Fraternity were able to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Martha's Church. Our spiritual assistant, Fr. Clemente, concelebrated with three other priests. It was a beautiful tribute to her!

This was received from Patrick Mendes, SFO, Minister of Mother Cabrini Region, July 31, 2004:

The following was received from Pam Nagle, SFO, Dec. 9, 2003

Peggy Lyons, SFO, was the beloved Vice Minister of the Holy Spirit fraternity in Hudson, Florida.  She was a diabetic, but had not been sick.  She had spent the day traveling home from upstate NY, where she had been visiting her family.  No one knows for sure, but she may have slipped into a diabetic coma during the night and passed peacefully into the Lord's hands.

Peggy was a very joyful and vivacious member of the Holy Spirit fraternity.  We had just seen her at their fraternity Visitation on November 2.  As always she was very welcoming and gracious, helpful, considerate, and loving, not only toward us, but to all her fraternity brothers and sisters.

The fraternity did have their annual Christmas party on Sunday, December 7 and then attended the wake for Peggy, where they held a Franciscan wake service for her.  There was no local funeral Mass, as the family will be holding that in NY.  The fraternity is in the process of scheduling a memorial Mass for Peggy at St. Michael the Archangel parish in Hudson, sometime in January or February, to be celebrated by Fr. Tom Murphy, our Regional Spiritual Assistant.

Please remember Peggy, her family and her fraternity, in your prayers.  Maybe she got the best Christmas present of all, a welcome into the arms of the Infant Jesus!

Peace,
Pam

Mina Walther, SFO [professed 1956, Chicago, Illinois]
d. June 14, 2003, at the age of 95.

The following was written by Dody Martin, SFO, Minister, Stigmata Fraternity, Sarasota, Florida:

I am writing to you to tell you about Mina Walther's funeral today.  She died last Saturday night.  You know she was always so quiet and unassuming.  She said to Father Henry " I have to apologize for not mentioning God in my articles.   I need to start doing that."   Father told her that her articles were always about God's handiwork and glory and that she was doing a great job just as she was writing.

The chapel was filled with mourners, they even  added chairs to accommodate those who spilled out into the lobby.  Father Henry said he decided to have it there even though it was more crowded than the big church would have been , because the chapel is where she worshipped the Lord 6 days a week!

She was 95 and was really ready!  Her energy level had been deteriorating, she would take a few steps down the path to her car and rest to catch her breath, but she was still driving and spending the week writing her column, and hand delivering it to the Herald each Friday. She spent hours in the library doing research, too.

A letter to the editor said: "too often today we are caught up in our daily lives and do not take time out to appreciate the simple beauty around us.  I believe that Ms Walther gave us a reality check.  We are a part of something bigger than ourselves and we must show the proper respect for the environment in which we live lest will lose it"

All these words of tribute attest to the fact that she was a real Franciscan [professed in Chicago in 1956, she was a charter member of our Stigmata Fraternity]  and she evangelized in the only way she knew how, as we all should.

Mina Walther was a  biology teacher in Chicago and moved to Sarasota to retire. Four years later she  she became a volunteer columnist for the Herald Tribune in Sarasota, Florida. She wrote essays titled "Tide Lines," on various subjects concerning nature and the environment, and she did this for 15 years. Every one of her columns were meticulously researched. She was a devout Catholic and attended St. Thomas More Catholic Church six days a week, taking part in the rosary at 7:30 am, followed by Holy Mass. And, of course, she was a devoted Secular Franciscan for so many years!
