We recall that 400 years ago, the first Capuchins arrived in 1611 in 'sHertogenbosch, (Holland). These paintings by Fr. Philippus Philippus, OFM Cap., have been created to commemorate this event in September-October, 2011.
Three of these paintings are related to this event: (left to right)
(1) The vision/dream of a rich man who became a priest after the death of his wife, in Den Bosch, and he went walking with his grandson. He met a Capuchin friar along the way, who was praying near a dark wooded area... later, he heard a friar preaching in the church of Saint John, and he realized the Capuchins should have a place in the city. The significance of the 'dark wooded area' is related to the name of the city. "Den Bos" (modern spelling) or Den Bosch (older spelling) also 'SHertogenbosch (Original Name) so named for the Forest of the Duke...
(2) The first friary in Den Bosch.
(3) Two Capuchin friars enter the gate of the city in order to make a foundation there.
The remaining sketches are from the Fioretti; St. Francis dreams of his noble ideas; Francis amid the people; Francis and the leper.
