St. Francis
and the Wolf
"The
story of Francis and the wolf of Gubbio is frequently the model for
peacemaking. It does not stop there. Francis stood in solidarity with all
that God Created. His Lord was the same Lord of all. His approach was
non-threatening - no weapons - just the sign of the cross. He understood the
wolf's need as well as the townspeople's. The reconciliation was two way. It
worked for the conflict between the bishop and mayor of Assisi, the civil
strife at Arezzo, the sultan even recognized Francis' peacemaking.

The
reality has to dwell within. The difference between a peacemaker and a
peace-wisher is letting God inside bring peace to those we meet. Francis
approached the wolf with the sign of the cross and called him brother. This
opened the door for negotiations. The wolf was brought back to the harmony
of God's creatures. The negotiating part was not the soft-spoken, easygoing,
nice person approach of a peace-wisher. Francis was not afraid of conflict.
He did not fear truth.
He was
gentle, unassuming, courteous, humble and peaceful. The truth showed him as
a brother creature. He showed the honor and love of God for harmony. He was
able to do this because he had nothing to defend - no property, reputation,
or ego." From an article by Friar Mike

As
a people, we should make peace with each other!
And, with the animals as well.
Peace begins at Home!
