What did Saint Francis really look like?

It is believed that the portrait, pictured on the left, is the earliest likeness of Saint Francis. It was painted in the 13th Century. This likeness was created when Francis was still a young man.

A Prayer before a crucifix
by St. Francis of Assisi

Most High, glorious God, enlighten the shadows of my heart, and grant unto me a right faith, a certain hope and perfect charity, sense and understanding, Lord, so that I may accomplish Thy holy and true command.

The image of St. Francis of Assisi that we most often picture is Cimabue's St. Francis, and the image at the right is a part of that. This likeness was of St. Francis as an older man.
